What is Rib Removal Surgery?
Rib removal surgery, also known as rib resection surgery, involves the surgical removal of the floating ribs (ribs 11 and 12) located at the bottom of the rib cage. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and is often combined with other cosmetic procedures, such as liposuction, to enhance results and improve the waist-to-hip ratio.
Dr. Parikh is one of the very few plastic surgeons in the nation who performs rib removal surgery. The procedure is often combined with liposuction or lipo360 for a better waist-hip ratio. It has gained more attention recently and is gaining popularity.
Relevant Anatomy
The rib cage comprises the sternum, ribs, and vertebrae. Typically, there are 12 ribs on each side, corresponding to the vertebrae labeled 1 through 12. The ribs are categorized as follows:
- True ribs (Ribs 1–7): Connect directly from the vertebrae to the sternum.
- False ribs (Ribs 8–12): These connect to the vertebrae but do not have a direct connection to the sternum.
- Floating ribs (Ribs 11 and 12): These are only connected to the vertebrae and have no attachment to the sternum.
Plastic surgeons often remove the floating ribs (11 and 12) to help narrow the waist. These two ribs are located at the bottom of the rib cage and are typically smaller, with cartilage at the tip. Since they do not attach to the sternum, they are positioned over the mid-waist area.
Benefits of Rib Removal Surgery
The procedure is complex and should be performed by plastic surgeons trained in handling rib dissections and rib removal procedures. Dr. Parikh will mark the back with two oblique incisions on the mid to lower back over the area of the floating ribs. General anesthesia is performed, and the 11 and 12th ribs are removed. A local anesthetic is placed in the wound for pain control, and the incisions are then closed.
Who is a Good Candidate for Rib Removal?
Good candidates for rib removal surgery are those seeking a slimmer waistline and a more balanced waist-to-hip ratio. Candidates must be in overall good health and not have any underlying medical conditions that could impede the healing process. Additionally, having realistic expectations about the surgery’s results is essential for a positive experience.

Reviews
Had the absolute best experience with Dr. Parikh and his staff! I made the decision to come out of state from Arizona to do 360 liposculpt and rib removal to improve my silhouette and have more of an hourglass shape as I am naturally very athletic and boxy.
I felt that I was in amazing hands from beginning to end. Diana and the office staff are all incredibly welcoming and kind and were always available and willing to answer any questions throughout the entire process. On surgery day, Dr. Salloum, the anesthesiologist, was very comforting and caring as were the nurses, Kristy and Denise.
Dr. Parikh himself has incredible bedside manner, made me feel comfortable and was always available to contact with any questions or concerns. He is an absolute artist and I have never been happier with my body. I look amazing! Thank you Dr. P!
