Rib Removal

Conveniently located to serve Seattle and Bellevue

Dr. Parikh is one of the very few plastic surgeons who perform this surgery in the nation. The procedure is often combined with liposuction or lipo360 for a better waist-hip ratio. The procedure has gained more attention recently and gaining popularity.

Relevant Anatomy

Rib cage illustration
The Rib cage consists of the sternum, ribs, and vertebrae. Normally there are 12 ribs on each side corresponding to each of the vertebrae labeled 1 through 12. The ribs can be categorized as follows: True ribs: connect from the vertebrae directly to the sternum – Ribs 1 through 7 False Ribs: connect from the vertebrae but do not directly connect to the sternum – Ribs 8 through 12 Floating ribs: only connected to the vertebrae – Ribs 11 and 12 The Floating Ribs are primarily what are removed by plastic surgeons in order to narrow the waist. Therefore Ribs 11 and 12 are the floating ribs and are at the bottom of the rib cage and are the last two ribs. The floating ribs are usually smaller and cartilage on the tip. Once again, they have not attached the sternum at all in the front. The Floating ribs are at the very bottom of the rib cage over the mid-waist area.

Rib Removal Procedure

The procedure is complex and should be performed by plastic surgeons trained in handling rib dissections and rib removal procedures. Dr. Parikh will mark the back with two oblique incisions on the mid to lower back over the area of the floating ribs. General anesthesia is performed, and the 11 and 12th ribs are removed. A local anesthetic is placed in the wound for pain control and the incisions are then closed.

Reviews

Had the absolute best experience with Dr. Parikh and his staff! I made the decision to come out of state from Arizona to do 360 liposculpt and rib removal to improve my silhouette and have more of an hourglass shape as I am naturally very athletic and boxy.

I felt that I was in amazing hands from beginning to end. Diana and the office staff are all incredibly welcoming and kind and were always available and willing to answer any questions throughout the entire process. On surgery day, Dr. Salloum, the anesthesiologist, was very comforting and caring as were the nurses, Kristy and Denise. Following surgery, I had Esmeralda do my lymphatic massages and she’s super talented and made my recovery much easier.

Dr. Parikh himself has incredible bedside manner, made me feel comfortable and was always available to contact with any questions or concerns. He is an absolute artist and I have never been happier with my body. I look amazing! Thank you Dr. P! S.M., Arizona

Combined Procedures

Liposuction – The procedure can be combined with liposuction or lipo360 of the waist. If there is fat in the area Dr. Parikh recommends liposuction of the waist from the front and back, followed by the rib removal procedure if the patient wants. Body Lift and Posterior Back Lift – If attainable the ribs can be removed during a back lift or a body. (See Body Lift section.) BBL Brazilian Butt Lift – Liposuction 360 or 360 lipo and fat transfer to buttocks for a slimmer waist-hip ratio. (See BBL Brazilian Butt Lift section.) Tummy Tuck – Can accentuate the waist after a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty

Reviews

Dr. Parikh did a beautiful job on my tummy tuck and liposuction. He is a skilled surgeon who I highly recommend. I met with three other plastic surgeons before choosing him. What stood out the most to me was how he approached my body, more like how an artist views a canvas. he was able to describe what he could do to get the look I desired and he accomplished it! I love my body. J.B.
