What Is a Forehead Reduction?

A forehead reduction is a surgical procedure designed to advance a person’s hairline further down the forehead as a way to reduce the height of the forehead and balance the proportions of the face.

Many individuals have foreheads that account for a large portion of the face. This can give women a more masculine appearance, as a high hairline/larger forehead is more common in men. It can also create the appearance of a receding hairline. Hairline lowering can give the face a more balanced appearance.

Am I a Good Candidate for Hairline-Lowering Surgery?

A scalp advancement is most commonly performed on women who are self-conscious about the disproportionately large size of their forehead. However, both men and women can benefit from the results provided by this procedure.

Good candidates for forehead reduction should have good skin elasticity, as it will make it easier to attain more natural-looking results. It is also important that the person have a hairline that is still full and showing no signs of receding; otherwise, the hairline will continue to recede after surgery and post-surgical marks on the scalp will become visible.

How a Forehead Reduction Is Performed

A forehead reduction is performed under general anesthesia and is an outpatient procedure. In most cases, it takes around two hours to complete.

During the procedure, an incision is made along the hairline. The incision allows the scalp to be advanced forward so that the new hairline sits lower on the forehead. The excess forehead skin is surgically trimmed. The hairline is typically lowered around three-fourths of an inch, though this varies based on the unique needs of the patient.
